Kazakhstan has recently started carrying out of individual oil operations on the sea. Yermek Marabayev, General Director of “KazMunayTeniz” company that develops offshore projects in the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea, told about the progress of such operations.

JSC OOC KazMunayTeniz, which celebrated its fifth anniversary this year, was one of the participants of KIOGE 2008, the 16th Kazakhstan Oil and Gas Exhibition. According to specialists? estimates offshore petroleum operations are enormously prospective. Yermek Marabayev, General Director of the Company, covered the following progress of offshore oil and gas projects.

Atashskiy, one of the biggest oil and gas projects, being implemented by JSC OOC KazMunayTeniz jointly with Lukoil Overseas, has not reached any expected results. A 2500-meter well has not indicated any oil or gas. JSC OOC «KazMunayTeniz» celebrated its 5th anniversary in the vast expanses of the country. The world consumes around 87 million barrels of oil per day with the demand for it growing. Over the last 20 years countries have consumed more oil than produced. As onshore hydrocarbon reserves are running out the humanity is approaching to the sea depths under the floor of which there are significant reserves of oil. And the Caspian Sea is not an exception.

For this reason the news that the first exploration well in the «Pearls» project within Kazakhstan Sector of the Caspian Sea indicated the presence of hydrocarbons was perceived with optimism among all participants of world gas production sector.

The construction of “Khazar 1” exploration well in the “Pearls” area located in the northern part of the Caspian Sea will not considerably impact the environment. This verdict was made by ecologists, Volkov G.P. and Abbatov A.A., on 10 May at the public hearings held by the Project Operator, “Caspi Meruerty Operating Company B.V.”. The shareholders of this company are JSC OOC “KazMunayTeniz”, Shell EP Offshore Ventures Limited and Oman Pearls Company Limited.
