On the commencement of exploration drilling on kurmangazy structure

12 august 2006

Today, Kurmangazy Petroleum LLP, operator of the project on development of Kurmangazy prospect offshore in the Caspian Sea, commences drilling a first exploration well in the Contract Area.

LUKOIL Shelf Ltd. is a drilling contractor under the project; it will use a jack-up drilling rig Astra. Drilling will be carried out in accordance with the technical design and EIA approved by the authorized bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The drilling operations (up to the depth of 2 thousand meters) will last for 78 days, the sea depth in the area is about 6 meters.

The structure of Kurmangazy is situated in the preserved area of the Caspian Sea, that’s why environmental issues are of priority importance there. State-of-the-art techniques and advanced technologies will be applied for the well drilling and testing, which will help to avoid environmental pollution. Pursuant to the requirements of the prevailing Kazakhstan law, drilling operations will adhere to the zero discharge principle. All drilling risks, including environmental ones, are subject to insurance.

Besides, constant environmental monitoring will be insured during the well construction stage. All industrial and domestic wastes will be transferred to the onshore base for further treatment and disposal.

The Kurmangazy offshore structure is located in the north part of the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea, west of the Buzachi peninsula. The contract area covers 3512 square kilometers.

The project is jointly implemented by Offshore Oil Company KazMunayTeniz JSC (a subsidiary of National Company KazMunayGas JSC) and RN-Kazakhstan LLC (a subsidiary of NC RosNeft OJSC) on a parity basis. Kurmangazy Petroleum LLP, a 100% subsidiary of OOC KazMunayTeniz JSC, has been entrusted to implement petroleum operations under the project.

A Production Sharing Agreement on the Kurmangazy development project was signed on July 6, 2005.
